The digestive system is a continuous tube that runs through us from top to bottom, or more specifically, from head to tail. An action in one part will directly affect the function in the next part down the tube. Ideally, we want the entire system to run its course from start to finish, meaning we eat, we digest, and our system has a chance to rest before we add more food into the mix. If you fall into the grazing category, this isn’t happening.

Given the way the digestive system operates, for optimal function we need to take breaks between meals and step back from the trough. Whether you want to go with the three meals and two snacks or you prefer six small meals throughout the day, at some point, you just have to stop eating. Ideally, we want to aim to take at least a two- maybe three-hour break between meals. This gives our body a chance to run the full cycle of digestion with time to rest and replenish in order to get ready for the next round of goodness to come through.

And while we’re on the subject, late-night eating is just plain useless. The midnight snack of cookies and milk doesn’t fit into the three- or six-meal plan. If you are hungry late at night, it probably means you’re tired. You’re mistaking the tired for hungry. Do yourself and your booty a favor and just go to sleep because that’s what your bod is really signaling. And fasting for twelve hours a night, between dinner and breakfast, gives your digestive system a rest and lets your body use its energy for healing, repairing, and restoring so you can get up the next day and do it all over again with a skip in your step.

The Love of Communal Dining

I am pretty sure I am not alone in the fantasy of that dreamy Tuscan table set under an olive tree, with the vineyard off to the right and the organic garden to the left. Before us is a spread of fresh delights. Around the table is the most fantabulous gathering of friends and family as we eat, laugh, and chitchat.
